Wat zijn microplastics en waarom zou je ze vermijden?

What are microplastics and why should you avoid them?

Jan 29, 2025Esmee Cruiming

Microplastics are tiny plastic particles, often smaller than 5 millimeters, found in many everyday products. They are created by the breakdown of larger pieces of plastic, but are also intentionally added to products like cosmetics, toothpaste, and even tea bags. While they may seem harmless due to their small size, microplastics have a huge impact on the environment and potentially on our health.

The dangers of microplastics

Microplastics are a major environmental problem because they are not biodegradable. They accumulate in oceans, rivers, and soil, where they are harmful to the ecosystem. Animals often mistake these tiny plastic particles for food, which has serious consequences for their health. But the impact of microplastics extends further: there are indications that they can also be harmful to humans.

Microplastics and health
Recent research suggests that microplastics, when they enter the human body, can lead to inflammation, oxidative stress, and even cell damage. A link has been found between the presence of microplastics in blood vessels and an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attacks and strokes. Furthermore, inhaled microplastics can lead to respiratory problems and have been linked to conditions like cancer and reduced fertility ( 1 ).

Some common products where plastics pose a hazard include:

Microplastics in tea bags
Some tea bags, especially those made of synthetic materials, can release microplastics during the brewing process. These invisible particles then end up in your drink and can be consumed unnoticed. Therefore, choose microplastic-free tea to protect both your health and the environment.

Microplastics in cosmetics : Many beauty products, such as scrubs, shampoos, and face creams, contain microplastics in the form of tiny beads or binders. These microparticles are washed away through the shower drain during use and ultimately end up in the water. With our microplastic-free care products, you avoid contributing to this pollution.

Microplastics in toothpaste : Surprisingly, some toothpastes also contain microplastics. These particles are used for abrasive cleaning, but they don't contribute to better cleaning. Instead, they pollute the environment and put you at risk of swallowing them. Our microplastic-free toothpastes offer a safe and environmentally friendly alternative.
